![]() The Buzz About Pollinators at Harvest GreenPollinators are the unsung heroes of nature. These tiny but mighty creatures are the reason we have so many of the fruits, vegetables and flowers we love, and life would look and taste pretty dull without them. At Harvest Green by Johnson Development, our 12-acre Village Farm relies on these busy helpers to keep our crops thriving and our farmers smiling. Here’s the buzz on our flying friends: You might say that pollinators are nature’s matchmakers. Bees, butterflies, some bird species like hummingbirds and even bats transfer pollen from one flower to another. This process allows plants to reproduce, grow fruit and create seeds. Without pollinators, many plants wouldn’t be able to thrive, and by extension, neither would we. Honeybees, bumblebees and even solitary bees are incredible workers, responsible for pollinating a third of the food we eat. Butterflies, with their delicate wings and playful flights, contribute to pollination while adding a touch of beauty to the environment. And let’s not forget the flashy hummingbirds, whose rapid wingbeats and love for nectar make them valuable allies to flowering plants. Our farm is a pollinator paradise. Sweet Italian, Thai, and Tulsi basil plants are absolute magnets for honeybees. Our farmers allow the plants to flower at the end of their growing season, and the bees definitely pay attention. Our Cucurbit crops, which include plants in the squash family, are another hit with pollinators. Bumblebees seem to have a special fondness for our Luffa plants. Our zinnias are a Gulf Fritillary butterfly favorite. It’s not just the farm that supports pollinators here at Harvest Green. The landscape supports them as well. Take the Salvia planted near the bridge at the farm’s entrance. This vibrant plant is a fantastic source of nectar for migrating hummingbirds, especially during the spring and fall. You might say it’s a win-win for everyone with pollinators getting fed and our farmers able to grow the plants that keep us fed. Thinking it might be nice to live in harmony with nature? Have we got good news! Our builders have plenty of available homes just waiting for you to move in. Plus, you’ll be part of a community that’s committed to sustainability and supporting the environment. Come see for yourself why life is sweeter (and greener) here.
