Harvest Green's First Resident Can't Wait to Garden with the Grandkids

When Margie McKay first learned of Harvest Green and its plans to become Houston’s first community focused on gardening and fresh produce, she knew it was where she wanted to live.

“I was in the market for something different,” says McKay. “The idea of growing my own vegetables and living in a community with gardening and farming right outside my back door really appealed to me.”

McKay didn’t waste any time. She signed a contract for a new home by Plantation Homes and just recently, became Harvest Green’s first resident.

“I love tomatoes and herbs and my grandkids love all kinds of peppers,” adds McKay, who moved to Harvest Green from the nearby community of River’s Edge. “The grandkids can’t wait to garden with me. “

In addition to opting for a raised, ready-to-grow vegetable garden in her own backyard, McKay and all other Harvest Green residents can lease land at the community’s Village Farm to grow their own food.

“It’s going to be a great family environment here at Harvest Green,” she adds. “Plus, it’s a Johnson Development community, so I can’t go wrong.”

While McKay says she’s thrilled to be known as Harvest Green’s first resident, she realizes she’ll soon have plenty of neighbors.

About 100 new homes currently are under construction in Harvest Green where new homes are available from the mid $260’s by D.R. Horton, Lennar Homes, Newmark Homes, and Plantation Homes.  New homes from the $300’s are available by Highland Homes, Meritage Homes, Perry Homes and Westin Homes. New home plans also are available from the $400’s by Darling Homes, David Weekley Homes and Trendmaker Homes.

Harvest Green families also will enjoy a variety of resident-only events as planned by the community’s full-time on-site Lifestyle Director, Sylvia Morgese. Several already have been hosted for those who have purchased homes in Harvest Green while others, including gardening classes, farm-to-table dinners with guest chefs and wine tastings, are in the planning stages.

Meanwhile, construction is well underway at The Farmhouse, Harvest Green’s sprawling, tree-lined family gathering place encircled by paved walking and biking paths featuring a fitness center, family pool with spacious sitting areas, ample shade and a splash pad outside the pool gates for year-round enjoyment. The Promenade will include a lakeside amphitheater for concerts and performances, a lush event lawn, park and playground.

A 1,300-acre community by The Johnson Development Corp., Harvest Green is conveniently located at the Grand Parkway and West Airport Boulevard minutes from the Energy Corridor, Sugar Land and Katy.
