![]() Goats, Greens, and Summer Vibes at Harvest GreenAs the Texas sun turned up the heat, our Farm Educators turned up the fun, mixing community vibes with a generous serving of farm-tastic experiences. At the Village Farm. Whether you were stretching your roots at yoga, meeting our goat VIPs (Very Important Pets), or discovering the magical possibilities of loofahs, there was no shortage of reasons to lettuce entertain you. June Farmers Market Highlights: Storytime and Smoothies June was truly the kale-abration we needed to kick off summer. First up, we had Storytime at the Farmers Market, where a special guest brought The Maggie B. to life in a way that made even the adults sit crisscross applesauce in awe. Also in June, our Yoga and Smoothies session was a big dill because smoothies taste 100 percent better when consumed in yoga pants. (Science hasn’t confirmed it yet, but we know it’s true). A Juicy Celebration for Harvest Green Residents June also brought the real star of the summer, our week-long tomato celebration. The resident-only week of tomato revelry culminated in our annual La Tomatina Padre event. It’s a free-for-all tomato toss where kids get to pelt their dad-figures with overripe tomatoes. After the last tomato was flung, we served up light bites featuring farm-fresh produce, proving once again that tomatoes are the toast of the season. August Farmers Market Highlights: Goats and Giggles By the time August rolled around, we were fully in the summer swing, and what better way to celebrate than with Goats, Giggles, and Goodies? Our fabulous goat squad made their star appearance at the Farmers Market, happily posing for selfies like the divas they are. Harvest Green residents even got to decorate goat-shaped sugar cookies, though we know at least half of those cookies didn’t make it out of the parking lot. Loofah Love at the Village Farm Speaking of unique summer activities, we went absolutely wild for loofahs this year! Yes, you read that right. Loofahs aren’t just for your shower; they’re a real farm-to-dish-to-sink-to-spa kind of crop. We harvested tender, young loofahs for eating, while the mature ones were turned into natural sponges. Because honestly, who doesn’t want a plant that doubles as a snack and a dish scrubber? Harvest Green’s Fig-tastic Orchard Update Our fig orchard deserves its own standing ovation. While the trees are still young, we managed to snag a tiny harvest to share at the Farm Stand. It was a fig deal, even in small quantities. Stay tuned, though, because this fall, we’ll be hosting another volunteer day in the orchard. More hands, more figs, more fun, what’s not to love? Prepping for Fall at the Village Farm While we hate to squash summer’s vibe, August marked the beginning of our fall prep. Farmers rolled up their sleeves and started the first round of seeds in the greenhouse, focusing on leafy greens like kale, Swiss chard, and tatsoi. Over in the tunnels, beds were renovated to make way for radishes and arugula. It’s kind of like the farm’s version of a makeover—except instead of contouring, we use compost. Wrapping Up a Summer to Remember at Harvest Green And there you have it, our summer, in all its sun-soaked, goat-filled, smoothie-sipping glory. But don’t go planting yourself on the couch just yet! Fall is just around the corner, and we’ve got even more tours, market fun, and farm-tastic surprises in store. Until then, remember: life’s a garden, so dig it—preferably at Harvest Green. |
