You Say '€˜Tomato' and We Say Tomato Fest, June 17

Harvest Green is seeing red — bushels of red — this summer as we turn our crop of tomatoes into a full-fledged tomato fest on Saturday, June 17, from 8 a.m. to noon.

The Harvest Green Farmers Market is overflowing with the globular fruit and our farmers think a celebration is in order. Come out and choose from an assortment of tomatoes (Not sure what to do with them? We have a booth for that!) and music by The Beyonders.

Renegade Kitchen and Catering will be there with a special tomato-themed menu including Roasted Tomato Chilaquiles and a “TBLT” — tomato, bacon, lettuce and even more tomatoes — sandwich.

The highlight of the event will be a tomato throw in honor of dads everywhere. The fun starts at 11 a.m. when dads will line up to be pelted with overripe tomatoes by their overeager children.

Stay to browse the other colorful vegetables on display. Summer is when everyone’s favorite produce comes out with an abundance of cucumbers, squash, peppers, eggplant, melons and corn. Our regular market vendors — including Loam Agronomincs, Timmy’s Tasty Organic Lemonade and our own Village Farm — also will be there, so come out to support local agriculture and meet the people behind the product!

In addition to whipping up traditional dishes such as succotash, vegetable lovers can break out their grills and smokers to bring out some natural flavor.  Try brushing eggplant with olive oil and balsamic vinegar before grilling. Or make a spicy salad with grilled peppers, potatoes and a spicy vinaigrette.

The tomato fest is just one of the many activities you will find each week at the Harvest Green Farmers Market. We always have a line-up of good music, great vendors and yummy food trucks. Our June 10 market featured storytellers from the George Memorial Library.

The market takes place every Saturday from 8 a.m. - noon, rain or shine. Visit our Facebook page  to find out more.
